ABOUT THIS SONG:
This song helped me get through the immense loss of my mom. God gave this song to me about six months after she passed away. The lyrics and melody came to me within moments, and they seemed to give voice to the feelings that had been bottled up inside of me. It also touched me with the hope we can have in God. My prayer is that this song might do the same for you if/when you experience the same kind of grief. Life can be tough. Loss can be so hard. Music helps.

My mother, Linda (Hall) Aikens, was born in Stone Mountain, Georgia. I am the second of her six children. Mom came down with lymphoma cancer and struggled with this awful disease for 7 years before "slipping away." I wrote "Holding On" as a tribute to mom, expressing the deep feelings and confusion of loss. Mom was only 52 years old when she died, and she left my younger siblings at home without a mother. We were all devastated.

I feel that the best studio musicians available in Nashville brought this song to life. The music helps tell the story. Verse one is about Mom and us realizing that she was terminal. The chorus recounts how we were "Holding On" with all that we had, not wanting to let go. Verse two moves into the emotions and frustrations of her loss. All we could do was "trust in God above and His unfailing love to bring us back together." In a lot of ways, our family is still "Holding On to what we once knew," and we are "feeling closer now to Heaven," knowing that Mom is up there waiting on us.

We all miss her, and I hope that by sharing some of our story in song with you, we might be a blessing to you on your "Journey of Faith." We want you to trust in "God's unfailing love."
